A Moral Crisis: Choosing Between Faith and Education on Eid al-Fitr

Dear Superintendent Dr. Taylor,

I speak to you today with a heart heavy with concern for the spiritual well-being of our students. As a Muslim, my life is governed by a devotion to both knowledge and faith. By scheduling a full instructional day on March 20, you are forcing our youth into a state of spiritual distress, compelling them to choose between their academic progress and their identity as Muslims.

True leadership requires the courage to protect the vulnerable. You have the power to rectify this exclusion. We do not accept the narrative that our holy days are “interruptions” to be worked around. They are the foundation of who we are.

I call upon your conscience to move on this makeup day. Show our children that MCPS is a district where their faith is respected as a primary pillar of their humanity, not a secondary concern to be accommodated through “excuses.”

With the expectation of swift action.
